Chungju World Martial Arts Festival
Chungju World Martial Arts Festival has been held since 1998 with the theme of Meeting between the World Martial Arts and Culture, for the globalization of “Taekkyeon”, a Korean traditional martial art.
It is the only festival sponsored by the UNESCO, in which martial arts and culture meet each other including International Martial Arts Contest, an exciting martial arts contest, and colorful cultural performances.
The Taekkyeon, inherited from the Goguryeo Dynasty, was systemized by the late Master Han-Seung Shin to be designated as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage 76, and Chungju City has established Taekkyeon Training Center to hold World Taek Kyeong Games and National Taekgyeon Championship every year
Furthermore, the headquarters of the World Martial Arts Union (WoMAU) is located in Chungju, and thus Chungju is being reborn as the Mecca of world martial arts through the brand “Chungju, the City of Martial Arts”.
